The second book of the Archer brother's tale.... Crockett leaves the family ranch in order to try for a position as a preacher, a lifelong dream, only to be hijacked by bandits who are, well, a bit long in the tooth. Shortly thereafter, he finds himself questioning God's direction for his life, taking a job preaching for his "abductor's" daughter, who is trying to save her father's once criminal and, now, somewhat broken heart. On the one hand, this book is light, with a tender romance between Crockett and Jo. On the other hand, it's far more serious. How many of us, like Jo's father, Silas, get stuck in an event from our past, an event that can color and even take over our future? How many of us come to a point in which we must make a choice? To continue to clutch desperately to past beliefs and hurts? To let go of what happened and hope for something new? Crockett Archer is a rancher turned preacher, who is on his way to an interview for what he hopes will be his first assignment. What he doesn’t expect is to have his train waylaid by a band of robbers who want to steal the preacher…not his belongings, but the man himself. Joanna has prayed for someone to help bring her Father into the community of the church. It was a promise she had made to her dying Mother. Asking her Father to deliver a preacher for her birthday seemed the way to make this happen.I enjoyed reading this book. From the zany way the preacher came to be in the old church in the Piney Woods of Texas, to the tender nurturing of young Jackson, this book is full of fun, strong moral values, and adventure. The book was fast-paced and filled with humor. I look forward to reading more books by author Karen Witemeyer.
