Bystander (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Eric is the new kid in town. He is trying to fit in and make new friends but it isn't always easy. After a couple weeks of sitting on the ground for lunch eric meets griffin. Griffin is the steryotypical hard core, bad, rule breaking kind of kid. Griffin invites Eric to play some ball one day, and they become the best of friends. Griffin is just trying to be nice to the new kid, but how do you know. Griffin is a bully to a kid they call halenback. Halenback is like a robot to Griffin, he will follow every single command/request made by his master. Eric and Griffin become really tight but one day Griffin dose somthing out of the ordinary and Eric just stands there as a bystander. This story is told from the authors point of view, so it is very intresting. This book took me 5 days to read and I loved. I would definatly recomend this to everyone!! When i started reading this book, I thought it was going to be good. I had high intentions. Honesty. However, it was not what I expected, and for many reasons.1) The blurb really doesn't explain the book well. To be honest, they didn't really bully Eric. They beat him up and that was pretty much all. Not that it was okay, but it was not like the did with the other kid, David.2) I thought this book was going to be a great story about bullying and how you ca deal with it. In the beginning of the story, when Eric asked David if he was okay, i thought he was going to be a good character who cared for others and would put his foot down at the bullying. No. In fact, I thought Mary was better than Eric was, since she stood up to the other girls, anc actually helped. Eric was a bystander, and didn't do anything about any bullying, including his own. Preller pretty much told the children reading his book not to tell anyone what's going on. 3) Eric broke into Griffins house. Um? Griffin broke a law when he stole the money and the CD, and Eric went ahead and broke another one to get them back. That's not a very good message now, is it?4) The ending was horrible. Really. Um, nothing good came out of the whole book. Eric didn't help at all and everything was fine since he wasn't bullied anymore. I think the only justice this book had was with the secondary characters, Mary and those girls. Preller put out bad examples and this book is not your typical bullying story where they stand up to the bully and there are ACTUAL LESSONS LEARNED. I would not suggest this to to anyone, don't waste your time on it.
