Calvin Can't Fly: The Story Of A Bookworm Birdie (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
A nerdie birdie bookworm spends all his time reading and not learning how to fly. When migration time comes, his family has to sccop him up and carry him with strings down south. Forunately for the rest of the murmuration, Calvin read a book about hurricanes, can see an approaching storm, and diverts everyone to a cave. Calvin gets so excited he used his book knowledge that he flutters and takes off. “Calvin is a starling. He was born under the eaves of an old barn with his three brothers, four sisters, and sixty-seven thousand four hundred and thirty-two cousins. Starlings have BIG families.” So begins Calvin Can’t Fly. While Calvin’s many relations are discovering things like insects, water, grass, and mud, Calvin discovers books and the library. When the other birds are learning to fly, Calvin is learning about dinosaurs and astronomy and history. So, when it comes time for them all to fly south for the winter, Calvin finds himself in a bind – he can’t fly! As the other birds lift off, Calvin starts to cry, until he realizes that they’re coming back for him (to tow him south). On their way they encounter some serious weather conditions and Calvin is able to save the day. Wide-eyed and scruffy-looking, Calvin and his filth of starlings will capture your heart. The watercolor illustrations are goofy and cute (and in some cases creepy – did you know cows wear lipstick??). This should appeal to “children” of all ages.
