Laura Patterson, who is an older psychology graduate student comes to Dare Island, NC, for respite and to work on her second book. She is tattooed, pierced, a bit Goth, and known as Hostage Girl because she had talked a bank robber into surrendering. Too much happened too fast--the hostage situation, writing the book about her experience, the book tours--and now she suffers from PTSD, panic attacks, and writer's.block for her sequel.GOOD LOOKING Jack Ross is the island's new police chief, recently divorced, ex-sniper in AFGHANISTAN and SWAT TEAM member from a big city PD, and facing his own demons. How can these two people NOT cross paths in such a small community? Will their steaming hot rebound relationship survive?I really liked the glimpse of this small community and the characters, and will seek out this author again, for no other reason that the characters are so strong. Just finished book. The length of time it took to read is no reflection on the book, just other time commitments. The book is actually quite short, only 282 pages - I would have easily enjoyed it in an evening if time had allowed.Small island town of Dare, outer banks of NC, recently relocated Philly cop meets vacationing author and psych student - sparks fly. First the negatives: Feel like the book totally missed out on the opportunity to paint the gorgeous picture of the location. A few details here and there, but if I didn't have first hand images to bring to mind, I would have completely missed out on the beauty and unique atmosphere - which definitely enriches the story. For such a short book, I would have preferred less word count devoted to the 'she could still smell him on her skin, his imprint on her body…' kind of stuff. However, I do realize this is a romance novel, therefore required. On to the positives: The author did a great job of bringing very relatable characters to life, I was left wishing this were a full length novel where I would have time to learn more about each. But then, mission definitely accomplished. I finished the book about 20 minutes ago. Less than 10 minutes ago I paid the extra $ for 2nd day shipping on the other three Dare Island books. 10/17/14 I received this book in the mail yesterday, having won it from Goodreads First Reads contest. I am excited to get started reading. Having grown up in Southeastern Virginia, I spent many teenage summer days in the Outer Banks of NC where this story is set. I have fond memories of the area, hope the book represents well!
