Cat And Mouse In A Haunted House (2004) - Plot & Excerpts
Written by Geronimo Stilton, a mouse who runs a newspaper in New Mouse City, Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House tells the story of how Geronimo finds himself stranded in a haunted mansion owned by cats on Halloween night. The story begins on a foggy night when Geronimo gets lost in the deep Dark Forest on his way to visit his aunt Sweetfur. Terrified he decides to keep driving in the hope that he might find his way back, but instead his car breaks down and his phone loses signal. At the same time, a raging thunder storm starts to terrorise the nights sky and Geronimo see’s before him a sign for Cannycat Castle. He makes his way there in the hope that he might be given directions to help him return home, but when he arrives he soon realises that the Castle doesn’t seem like the most welcoming of places. There are cat statutes everywhere, the window panes are blood red and there is a moat filled with slimy green water surrounding it! Driven inside to seek shelter from the storm, Geronimo soon discovers that the Castle belonged to the Cannycat Clan and he begins to get the feeling that he is not alone. Spooky things start happening and he encounters a wicked ghost called Slicedpaw who chases him and then disappears into thin air. He alerts his sister Thea, who is also a journalist and she agrees to come and see what all the fuss is about as it would make a great story for the newspaper. She arrives with Trap Stilton and Benjamin Stilton, Geronimo’s cousin and nephew, and they don’t see any ghosts at all. They begin to tease Geronimo, and accuse him of eating too much cheese. His nephew, Benjamin, is the only mouse who believes Geronimo is telling the truth. He keeps notes of all the creepy events, and it soon transpires that all is not what it seems. The mice realise they have been pranked into believing the Castle is haunted by the two little cats that live there. The two cats, Pawkin and Pawette, explain that by making strangers believe the castle is haunted they will keep the slimy salescats away. They tell the mice that the salescats want to sell their family home, and the only way they can stop this from happening is to pretend it is haunted. The story ends with the cats and mice making a plan to turn the castle into a visitor centre where other mice can come to learn the history of the Cannycat family, as well as witnessing the scary pranks of the two cats. In this way, Pawkin and Pawette will be able to pay for the upkeep of the castle and they won’t have to worry about the salescats anymore. The mice return a year later, and business is booming.I found this story to be really enjoyable. It would be a great book to use in the classroom at Halloween as it is both scary and funny, and am certain it would keep the attention of pupils. In my opinion, it is aimed at those aged between six and eight and would be an interesting book to use as part of a drama lesson as children could act out what they would do if they were in Geronimo’s shoes. Although the book is ‘authored’ by ‘Geronimo Stilton’, the idea was originally thought up by Elisabetta Dami. I have given this book five stars and would definitely use it in the classroom.
Haha.. I have a funny story about this book. I read it in grade four and it really freaked me out. A month later when I was lying in bed at night thinking about this book I started to hear something. My mind was playing tricks on me and I actually heard a ghost going: oooOOoooo! In my bedroom and out side in the hallway. I got shivers up my spine and I was terrified! I ran up stairs and was freaking out like crazy. My mom told meIt was probably just the pipes. I went back to bed and lay still listening for the sound again. Sure enough I heard the same eerie ghost noise in moving from the hallway to in my room and back again. I got an actual shiver up my spine which I have to admit was a pretty cool experience. My mom figured out I was hearing things so she told me to think about happy things. When I got back down to my room I constantly thought about fairies and unicorns and rainbows till I fell asleep and I was fine. Read this book with caution. :P
What do You think about Cat And Mouse In A Haunted House (2004)?
Get this book....or else! Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House is by Geronimo Stilton. This is the BEST book! Geronimo is trying to get out of a haunted house where there are rat skeletons, a ghost cat, and other creepy, spooky stuff. Sometimes his cousin fools Geronimo. Read the book to find out if he makes it out of the haunted house! My favorite part is when Geronimo gets scared. He's grown-up and is still scared of all different things. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to my mom because I enjoy reading it with her!

The third book in the Geronimo Stilton series, this book centres around a haunted castle that Geronimo comes upon one very stormy and dark night while trying to visit a family member. Geronimo gets lost and comes upon this castle, deciding to go in to ask for help he is instantly scared as it is the house of the Cannycat family. He searches the house for help from someone to get back to the road or to stay the night or to at least call for help. He suddenly sees a ghost and a rat skeleton and runs from the house. His cellphone starts to work so he calls his sister who comes immediately to his rescue and for the story as well. Searching the castle with his sister, cousin and nephew, who were brought along for the ride by Thea, they try to find the ghosts, but it seems only Geronimo sees them, though it is weird how it happens and his nephew thinks something funny is going on so takes notes. Will they be able to find the ghost before the sun rises or will it always be a mystery? This was a great book. I loved the mystery of the book. It was haunting but very interesting. Written in the typical Geronimo Stilton style it was well done.
