Cat Says Meow: And Other Animalopoeia (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I come from a family that loves a good graphic design element in everything. From books to movies to posters there is graphic design all around…and there is some good stuff out there. The fun thing about this book is that it speaks to the graphic design heart of mine. Basically the sounds that animals say are used to illustrate the different animals in the book. So if a cat says “meow” then the letters “M”, “E”, “O”, and “W” are all used to make the illustration of the cat. In this case the “M” are the ears, the “E” and “O” are the eyes, and the “W” is the mouth of the cat. I love how simple shapes like a circle can have some good typography thrown in to make an illustration that really makes sense. The other great thing about this book is that it has simple text. Toddlers who are learning the sounds of animals will love that all one page says is “Lamb says baa.” Because then they get to 1. make the sound “baa” and 2. turn the page and move on. Seriously, this is a fun little book that will be interesting for the grownups who are interested in good typography or graphic design along with little ones who just love to look at illustrations of animals and to say the animal onomatopoeia. Such fun. I received Cat Says Meow: and other animaolopeoia as part of a Goodreads giveaway.Oh, man. So I fully expected to glance through this, then give it to a kid in my life. Now I'm seriously thinking about keeping it. An adorable animal book with sweet, simple illustrations, with the letters of the sounds the animals make (as in the titular "meow") creating features and details on the animals.Too cute for words. A quality book, with beautiful packaging. Having written this, I'm definitely keeping it. Sorry, little cousins.
