Churchill (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I can't seem to get enough Churchill biographies. And Paul Johnson's is among the best. Well researched, written and filled with anecdotes and pithy quotes. I especially liked Johnson's arguments as to whether Churchill "saved England" during WWII. Also the lesson's learned at the end of the book were something atypical of biographies, but I loved them. Not only that -- I'm going to retain these for for the future. Inspiring! Things I learned from Churchill:"Conservation of energy. Never stand up when you can sit down. And never sit down when you can lie down.”Aim High. His father didn't think he'd amount to much, but he aimed high anyway and didn't settle for mediocrity. Don't spend energy on negative thoughts of vengeance or ill feelings. Forgive and move on. His gift for writing and speaking had a real and lasting effect on his nation, and on the world. Good writing really can change the world (just like my old grad school English professor Trish Jenkins used to tell us). He identified what his strengths were and focused on those. Have a good attitude and sense of humour.
