Cleveland (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I held off on reading this, because I knew it was the last Harvey. Even though there's still plenty of his work I've yet to read, and I've read a lot of it already, there's still that sense of finality. It's thoroughly enjoyable, even if some of it feels like a summary of some of his earlier work. Still there's that undeniable character to his work, that irascible nature that comes through in every word. I'll miss his work, and I'll miss that independent, uncompromising spirit. Thanks, Harvey. Sorry I didn't drop by with the praise earlier. A sweeping historical examination on the rise and fall and gradual recovery of Cleveland - America's finest forgotten metropolis. The story of the city is intertwined with Harvey's own upbringing and like most of Pekar's works the best moments are found in subtle, yet beautiful attention to the most mundane moments and details. Joseph Remnant's accompanying illustrations pay spot-on homage to R. Crumb and evokes a nostalgia for a golden age the city will never re-obtain.
