Confessions Of A Counterfeit Farm Girl (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
Any memoir I read is automatically compared to the brilliance that is Jen Lancaster. I feel sorry for authors when I read their books because I can't help but compare their work instead of reading it for what it is. With that being said, I do applaud Susan. She was funny and kept my attention, which is generally a hard thing to do. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I hadn't just moved from NYC to the NJ suburbs where a lot of Susan's prior activities occurred, and so I can relate a lot more to what she is saying. I have already started the follow up/sequel to this book and am anxious to see what she can possibly write about now. It was an interesting and fast read. She made me laugh, which counts as everything. Regardless, I'm sorry Susan, I gotta say this, in my eyes you're still no Jen Lancaster. But you just keep on truckin girl! I guess I should have read the reviews before reading this (and recommending it to my entire book club - sorry gals!). McCorkindale writes long, drawn-out stories that end up being boring and not very funny. The chapters about her sons disgusting bathroom habits and smells I just flat out skipped. Who wants to read about that? Why weren't those chapters left on the editing floor? I agree with another reviewer that the author is just too self absorbed to be a good story teller. If she'd get out of her own way and just tell a dang story, maybe it would be funny. But then, maybe she'd not have enough for a book...which maybe wouldn't be a bad thing.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, but began losing interest the further I delved in.
