At the bottom of the stairwell they emerged into a large chamber. The walls on either side had crumbled over time, leaving piles of rubble strewn around the room. Decayed sentinels stood on marble pillars, forming a path to the closed door at the far end. ‘Your sentinels are inactive,’ Sedaris said. ‘A sanction imposed by the Families,’ Tarmyr growled.
