Cooking Dirty: A Story Of Life, Sex, Love And Death In The Kitchen (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Jason Sheehan's intimate view of the raucous goings-on in the galleys of short-order cooks is a good romp for a weekend. Not for the squeamish or those who are obsessed with cleanliness. Written in the working man's vernacular, Jason lets us gawk over his shoulder at events that had me laughing out loud at times, and reading with my mouth gaping wide in surprise at others. The story drags a little towards the end when the focus turns to his love life. Overall, a fun read whose redeeming quality is its fast-paced, crazy-but-true plot.Sending this one to my daughter, the chef. I really liked this at the beginning, especially the author's rich, detailed writing and straight-up humor following the more stilted, self-conscious tone in "Waiter Rant." But the bloom wore off the rose, so to speak, past the first few hundred pages. The title of the book is apt: this guy is raunchy. After awhile, the theme of sex, drugs and rock and roll with knives and lots of pissed off cooks wasn't as thrilling. But if you're into food memoirs (and learning how crazy people in the industry are), it's a good read.

What do You think about Cooking Dirty: A Story Of Life, Sex, Love And Death In The Kitchen (2009)?

Pretty much a Kitchen Confidential for the short-order cook crowd. Totally in my wheelhouse.
