Daemon's Mark (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I have been a fan of this series since the start. I really LOVED the last book; I liked the growth and maturity in the character Luna. She went from being self-involved and obnoxious to being a very likeable character. I hate doing bad reviews; I have friends who are authors and my daughter is an author. That said, let's talk about this book...This story was flawed from the start. It begins with a victim that you could care less about. Next, you add the parents of the victim, who you are completely unable to relate to and who are overly obnoixious. By this point, you are begining to trudge through, hoping this story picks up somewhere. Then, you add a perfectly nice new detective....that Luna verbally abuses not-stop! To me, this completely erases all the progress made in the last two books as far as Lunas growth and maturity. She has completely reverted back to being unlikable. This is when you are asking yourself, "why am I reading this book?" But I trudged onward, and I reached the middle of the book. This is the point where, for me, it goes from a 2 1/2 - 3 star book to being a complete trainwreck. I wont bore you with spoilers here, other than to say Kittredge takes the story to new levels of low. I seriously had completely given up on this book by this point. Without saying who, I will say she sacrificed a perfectly good character for no good reason (other than shock value, I guess). By the time it was over, I was very disappointed! In all honesty, I would rate this book about 1/4 of a star. Since they don't have that option, I will give it a 1. As far as recommending this book: my advice to fans of this series is to skip this book and pretend the last one was the end of the series. From the Back Cover:When the Dubois investigation turns up an unexpected connection to the Russian mob, Luna finds herself heading down a terrifying path of no return. Soon she is held captive by the very evil she hunts—one that reaches far across the borders of Nocturne City to the seedy brothels of Europe and beyond. Now, with street smarts, seduction, and a sixth-sense for danger as her only weapons, Luna will enlist the help of her former lover Dmitri—who has his own reasons for bringing down this crime ring—and risk it all in the ultimate showdown. The Review: This book was much darker than the first few books, and half the time I was worried that she finally stuck her foot in her mouth one to many times, and that she wasn't going to make it out there alive.. But then again we are talking about Luna here. For this beiing rumoured to be the last book in the Nocturne City series it sure as hell went out with a bang. I couldn't have hoped for more non stop action that kept you on your toes as she fought her way in and out of some of the most desperate situations that I've seen her come out of. Come on crazy pack leaders, even crazier witches, Wendigos, and crazy Thelemites. Ya this, this couldn't keep her down if none of the rest couldn't.. Loved the book, Love the Author.. If there are more in the series I will be one of those out there waiting for it to be written.
