Daisy Gets Lost (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is the story of a dog. Like any other dog this dog likes to play fetch with its. On this particular occasion the dog sees a squirrel and chases it into a forest. The story continues with a young girl looking for Daisy, and Daisy wondering around the forest looking for her owner. Text to self- I remember a time when I was younger that my little sister wondered away from our mother in a grocery store. When we noticed she was gone, we started running around frantically looking for her and she was doing the same for us. We did up finding her, and let’s just say we never lost her again!Text to text- I’ve read another children’s story about a lost dog, the book was called Lost by Paul Johnson. In this story a girl loses her dog in the desert. She searches for him for weeks but never finds him. Until one a man stops by her house with a dog that matches the description on her posters. Thankfully in Daisy gets Lost, the dog isn’t lost for weeks in the woods. Text to world- Most families these days have pets. There have been times when kids come to school because their dog or cat go out and ran away as they are leaving in the morning. At the end of the day the younger students have spent most of their day worrying about their pet, and by the time they come home the pet has either been found or returned safely. As a teacher we need to be about to recognize with the younger students that they consider a pet a part of the family and when they think that the pet is lost, they think they are gone forever and it can turn around the student’s entire day. Daisy is out playing fetch with his little girl. He is chasing the ball one more time when he sees a squirrel and is off on a chase through the woods…and gets lost. Both Daisy and his little girl are so relieved when they find each other again. This simple (but very canine) story is told almost entirely through the illustrations with just a few words thrown in here and there. A fun choice for kids who love dogs and are just learning to read. Raschka’s illustrations are so unique, and Daisy is loveably 100% typical dog.
