Davids Liste - Was Bleibt, Wenn Ich Gehe (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

The Priority List by David Menasche is a true story about the author, a high school teacher who was diagnosed with brain cancer. He lost his vision and for the most part, his mobility. Vowing not to go out without a fight, he decides to go on a long trip with the help of his former students. I could tell he must have been a fantastic teacher because his former students go way out of the way to help him. One of the best parts of this book is the written test for many of his former students.I loved this book--it's a great story! David shows that even now, he is still teaching.(Gerard's review) Solid book if a bit depressing. I chose the audiobook version which is read by the actual author. It is pretty neat hearing everything in his own voice. It's uplifting to hear his connections to students, and it pretty much follows my own educational journey...except for the cancer part. But seeing how he confronts it and pushes through it is inspiring. His objective reporting of how his wife slowly separates from him and leaves him is a bit tough, but he handles it well narratively well.He also set up the little vignettes well throughout the story punctuating each of his stops with the stories that connect and resonate.Worth listening to.
