De Fietsrepubliek (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I absolutely loved this book. Pete came to Amsterdam the same year as me and I fell in love with the city just like him, because of the fact that the city belongs to the bikes and cycling is such an integral part of Dutch society. A lot of very thorough research into Amsterdams history and the history of cycling make this a very in intriguing book to read for any one the is interested in cycling and the Dutch. I like the way this guy writes. Personable, clear, often humorous but not entirely funny. His treatment of the history of bicycling in Amsterdam over the past 100+ years gives a fairly thorough view.I also enjoyed the way he mixes how he came to immigrate to Amsterdam with the rest of the story. His history is part of Amsterdam's and he handles the integration of the two very well.I did find it interesting that he completely omitted one of what I thought was the largest anti-motor vehicle protest movements of the late 1960s-early 1970s, “Stop der Kindermord.” Perhaps I'll contact the author to see what he says as to why this particular omission.Overall, if you are interested in history, transportation, bicycling history, or Amsterdam in general, this is the book for you.

What do You think about De Fietsrepubliek (2013)?

Very slow - but it did inspire me to ride while visiting Amsterdam!
