Jody Hedlund does it again with her memorable characters and thoroughly researched, historically inspired storyline. With its beautiful descriptions, rich landscapes and swoon-worthy romance, The Doctor's lady will hold you captive and keep you guessing until the very last chapter. This story encompasses the lives of Priscilla White and Dr. Elijah Ernest, who both have a burning passion to be in the mission field and to share the love of Christ with its native people. Priscilla's fiery spirit and spunky character often led to entertaining dialogues when coupled with Eli's rugged seriousness.Forced to marry one another, their story takes numerous turns as they take the hard and long 7 month journey west through harsh terrain to reach Oregon Country. Though often reluctant to show the depth of feeling stirring towards each other during this time, we get glimpes of Eli's charming and gentle self. It was entertaining watching them fight off their attraction and harden themselves only to see that growing love get strengthened each time. Priscilla blossomed under Eli's praises and acceptance. The steadfastness of God was depicted throughout their journey and even showcased in their respective pasts which was sadly overshadowed by loss. These characters not only took the strenuous journey west, but also developed as individuals bringing to life the power of forgiveness and acceptance. The Doctor's lady was exquisitely executed and eloquently written in way that is sure to stir up your emotions as a reader. My rating is 4.5 stars. The best part of this book is that much that takes place is real, the places are real, and some of the scenes come right from a diary. Doctor Eli Ernest is determined to go west and begin a mission. He, however, has two problems. One, the mission board won't allow him to go single. Two, he believes that no woman is strong enough to make the trip. He hardly has a choice, however, in taking a wife. Too many that went single, end up marrying those to whom they minister. This didn't sit well with the mission board. Priscilla White wants to go to India to teach. She just knows that is where God wants her to be. She has been told that due to a severe case of mumps that she will never give birth to children. Because of that, she believes she should never marry. Once again, however, she also is turned down by the mission board for being single. With some help from others the two enter into what they call a business arrangement. They will marry, and she will make the trip. If she is too weak, he will send her back with an annulment.Priscilla complains so little about her arrangements, and she tries very hard to please Eli. She is a character that is so well developed, and I fell completely in love with her. No, she isn't perfect, which endears her all the more to the reader. I found myself getting a bit frustrated with Eli. He does try to take care of and protect Priscilla. However, in so many cases he never asks her what are her wants or needs. Another couple is taking the trek with them, and he doesn't get along with Henry well either. With Eli, it is his way or no way. That attitude eventually changes, but God has to use some scary circumstances to teach the lesson. There are many lessons for the reader to take from this wonderful story of two people who marry so they can follow the call God has placed on their hearts. They have some sweet times, and a lot of sadness, but God brings them through and teaches them so much. This is really a magnificent read, and I highly recommend it! Jody Hedlund has once again written a beautiful novel with an inspirational story that will emotionally reach out to the reader!
What do You think about De Zendelingsvrouw (2012)?
They can only be missionaries if they are married. Will their "business deal" work?
