Emily causes quite a mess, lucky for her her sister is on her side. There are real consequences in this book, sure there was a hopeful note, but what happened doesn't get swept away nor was saving Emily as easy as finding out why she needs to be saved in the first place. All in all a soothing read about a younger sister saving her older sister and becoming stronger mentally in the process (more mature). I'll stick with Heir Apparent. The first half of the story I found truly entertaining. Vivian Vande Velde manages to mock both gamer expectations and mass-market princess media without being mean-spirited. Once Emily and Grace team up, however, it starts to feel like a missed opportunity. Video game characters finally snapping and fighting back against a player's exploitation and the players trying to outwit them under a new set of rules could be fascinating, but here it feels like a jarring string of "oh, look, now we're HERE" scenes rather than a clever and consistent plan or twist.
