Even when he had been out cold, he could feel her looking at him. It made him uncomfortable—mostly because he hated what she must’ve been thinking of him. He hadn’t intended to make reference to his past when they were talking. It was better for everyone if that stayed buried. But it was almost like she could see right into his soul. And that made him want to yak up all the muffins he’d wolfed down at breakfast. If she’d had any idea what he’d done in his lifetime, could see even a fraction of the shit that gave him nightmares, she wouldn’t look at him in that particular way she had that made him want to drag her into his arms and not let go. He glanced over to where Sarah and Eli were sitting in the grassy field next to the truck stop where he’d been told to rendezvous with his fellow Templar, both of them needing to stretch their legs and be out of the SUV for a few minutes. As he watched, Sarah closed her eyes and turned her face up to the sun, her hair lifting slightly in the autumn breeze.
