What do You think about Der Hexer Und Die Henkerstochter (2012)?
The Poisoned Pilgrim is every bit as good as the previous Hangman's Daughter Tales. Mr.Potzsch knows well how to grab a readers attention and keep it through out the story. When the book opens it 1666 Bavaria. We find Magdalena married to Simon and the mother of two toddler boys. The couple is taking a pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain in the next town to pray in Thanksgiving that our Lord saved her two sons from the fever they had the year before. When they arrive at the Monastery they are surrounded by secrets in every direction. There is fever and plague overcoming the 100s of pilgrims arriving for the Festival of the Three Holy Hosts. There is a weird little monk who is the watchmaker and who created an automaton. So many monks with their own needs. But, murder abounds and one Monk is taken to the dungeon as he is accused of the evil deeds and of being a sorcerer. At home the Hangman's wife Anna is very sick but when Madalena's note requesting that he come to the Holy Mountain to help in the solving of all the many mysteries they are finding. The story is pretty much correct in the matter of the historic facts. It's well researched and very well written. It left me hoping Mr.Pötzsch will be writing additions to the series.

I have read the other Hangman's Daughter books and did not enjoy this as much. Phrasing was troublesome, the who-done-it solved too quickly and some portions of the story didn't fit. For example, when they burst into the Knacker's home looking for the Hangman the daughter denies he is in town, yet her children are raising a racket. The people looking for the Hangman started the pilgrimage with the daughter and know she didn't bring her children. How could the overly loud children not be a major clue? Why didn't anyone ask how the kids got there? The Hangman is a giant of a man and all it took was a monks robe to disguise him? Does everyone have a Van Dyke beard?
