I got this book solely for the short story "Shades of Honor" which highlights Lucifer Yaslana and Surreal SaDiablo. Lucifer is my #2 favorite character of mine and I really enjoyed how this story fleshes him out a little more, lets us see what happens to him and his Eyrie. He retains his charm, anger and fierce protectiveness that made me love him in the original trilogy. The four star rating is based only on this short story. In fact the other stories are what made me rate it down from five. Though if I were to rate only on them it would be a 3..or 2. I did, however, read the other stories as well. They are...meh. I just don't like how Daemon, my #1 favorite of all time, is portrayed. I feel like he gets the shaft of one dimensional-ness in these other books of the series. Though I do like the little glimpses of him in the Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady. Also Janelle and the High Lord...in just a short story?!?! The injustice! Like the Black Jewels Trilogy, the writing style drew me in, but I have to say, there are a lot of problematic themes in this series, particularly the extreme gender essentialism, and it it doesn't get better here. Male characters "protective" attitudes read as very controlling, the ideas that men and women are completely inscrutable to each other, to the point where "logic" is not a gender-neutral concept, really frustrates me. One of the stories, Shades of Honor, reminded me a bit of the Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel, mostly for shallow reasons. The villain's name, Falonar, sounds like someone that Ayla and Jondalar might meet, and his actions came off like some of the villainous characters from that series. The last story in this collection in particular, The High Lord's Daughter, almost read like a fanfic. Still the author's voice, but a subject matter which seems like the sort of thing a fanfic writer would write about, though I can understand why an author would want to explore her characters more, and that their story doesn't end when the plot does. Good read for those who enjoyed the Black Jewels series. This book has a much lighter tone overall than the trilogy, though there are some dark moments. Like all the books in this series, serious trigger warning for anyone who has ever been abused or raped.
