This is truly a wonderful read! It is difficult to believe this is Torday’s first novel; because, it reads like he’s been writing his whole life!!! It is a super easy read and VERY enjoyable. Honestly, if I knew it was about a kid’s ability to talk to animals I would not have picked it up and I would have missed one of the best books that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. This is the beginning of an exciting series and the book gives a clue on what to expect in the next book. A terrible disease has wiped out all the animals, crops and some people in the world and young Kester has been sent to Spectrum home for protection. The problem isn't the formula they feed him or the abuse from the head of the facility or even the drab boring days - it is the loneliness Kester feels and the fact that he has not been able to speak a word since his arrival. A talking cockroach leads him to a startling discovery, that he can communicate with animals and soon a jailbreak is in order. From there his journey will take him to meet the Wildness, leader of all remaining animals and a new friend who will guide him on his quest to save the animals and find a cure for the disease before it is too late. Fans of "The Wizard of Oz", "Narnia" and "Wildwood" will love the gentle wisdom and wit of the animals and the fast paced adventure story. This is the first book in what looks to be a promising series for kids.
Tried to finish this book but I am giving up. It isn't keeping my attention.
