Die Wette42.000 Km, 2 Männer, 1 Globus, Kein Flugzeug (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
I had very high expectations from a review I read, which the first couple of chapters helped to support. Having two friends, who happen to be Hollywood gag writers, race each other around the world, is a delightful premise after all! Sadly, the execution doesn't nearly live up to expectations. All Steve and Vali do is jet around the globe meeting a couple of old friends, often residing in five star hotels and barely ever leaving the tourist track. Countries are described cursorily at best, and they're trying a bit too hard to be funny. The one thing I'll give them is that despite this obsession to be funny, they are respectful of the countries they visit, and even seem to be trying to foster some understanding. All in all not an annoying read, but man, what a disappointment. I never thought a travel book would be a good read, boy was I wrong. These two guys are hilarious. They have a bet on who can travel across the world fastest. One guy goes east the other west. One rule, they are not supposed to fly. One of the guys is the creator/writer of Family Guy and the other is a comedy writer for people like Letterman and others ( I forget the names now) One guy cheats. I was in tears at some of the things that they went through and they way they write with the comedic style makes it awesome to read.
