Dinosaur Feather (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

After reading excellent reviews, I expected this to be a really good mystery with well written dialogue, descriptions, etc. but was slightly disappointed. In the beginning the writing seems first class, but as I read on it became repetitious, melodramatic and at times the translation was not quite English. Also the characters did things that were illogical--screaming at each other, not answering phones, disappearing for no obvious reason. Anna-Bella Nor is to defend her thesis on the continuing controversy of birds being present-day dinosaurs. Her horrible supervisor, Prof. Lars Helland dies mysteriously and brutally in his lab with his tongue and a copy of Anna-Bella's thesis on his lap. This is actually the only really interesting part of the book. Anna is a single mother yet relates to her mother very strangely, screaming at her, hanging up the phone on her, angry at her. The story behind this is just silly. This whole segment just didn't ring true.Enter the police detective, Soren Marhauge, beset by regret at things he has done in his past regarding his ex-girlfriend and his family. He questions Anna who takes an illogical dislike to him and doesn't answer her phone when he calls. The dinosaur/bird controversy is fascinating, but for a murder mystery goes on a little too long. We get the argument early on, we understand Anna-Bella's thesis argument and could have done with less scientific explanations. The author has done a lot of research on this and should be commended, but I think it just lengthens the story. The detective, Soren, doesn't solve a thing although he seems to get a bright idea again illogically toward the end of the book but Anna-Bella is way ahead of him.Despite all the good reviews I would not recommend this one. This is Gazan's first. I would wait for her next one. Her writing may get better.

What do You think about Dinosaur Feather (2000)?

Book failed to pull me in after 100 pages, so I closed it and decided to read no more.

There were many disappointments -- in plot and several in character.

Science, Copenhagen, and death. A nice way to spend a rainy weekend.
