Dinosaurs Love Underpants (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
This book is about a theory of why dinosaurs became extinct. It suggests they fought over underpants and that we should appreciate our underpants for that reason.I like this book because it is silly but fun and the pictures are amusing. This could be used in the classroom during a dinosaur topic or in guided reading as a lot of inference is needed to comprehend the text.I would recommend this book to be read to key stage 1 children. ‘Dinosaurs Love Underpants’ follows the story of multiple dinosaurs and their dedication to wearing underpants. T-Rex steals some underpants, after chasing a few cavemen down a path and because of his puny little arms his underpants didn’t go on properly (also because he has gigantic legs compared to a caveman). Triceratops gets a bit crazy with the whole underpants fad and decides to mix it up by wearing underpants on its horns, after a fight with another dinosaur the poor underpants are torn. The cavemen have a meeting about the dinosaur’s obsession with underpants, because there’s an undies shortage. The dinosaurs fight so much with each other that all the dinosaurs were wiped out, much to the cavemen’s delight. There is a nice little page at the end that shows an afterthought for the present day, undies will never be looked at the same again! This story is brilliant for a comedy week for KS1 as children can design their own underpants and make them during Design and Technology. They can also come up with their own ideas for other natural occurrences and create their own reasons. This would be a good opportunity to use random picture dice around a topic, so that children can explore their creative writing and imagination. I would recommend this story for both KS1 and early KS2, as it can be utilised in creative writing during literacy.
