Dog Tags (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Billy Zimmerman was a police officer in Paterson NJ and then he put his career on hold to fight in Iraq. He lost a leg when a young girl, used as a suicide bomber, blew up and killed several people including an Iraqi official who was to investigate and remove oil industry corruption. After Zimmerman's recovery and return to the States he tries to go back into the police force but is rebuffed and told all he could have is a desk job. That is not good enough for him so he leaves the police force. The only good thing that happens is he is reunited with his army service dog Milo, who was discharged for being "too old". The two become thieves and one night Zimmerman decides to steal an envelope he believes contains damning information. However things go badly wrong and Zimmerman is accused of murder. I have read several books by Rosenfelt and will read more. If a client has a cold nose and four legs Andy Carpenter just can't help himself. He has to get involved to help. Pete comes and asks Andy to help a friends dog get out of the pound. Andy finds Milo a police trained German Sheppard behind bars with an armed guard. What would a dog need with an armed guard is a question that Andy asks only to find out that Milo and his owner are in deeper trouble than what is on the surface.Billy Zimmerman, Milo's owner, is an ex-cop who while serving in Irag lost his leg in an explosion and was let go from the force, turns to stealing with Milo as his companion. When a plan to steal and envelop goes down bad, Billy is arrested for murder and Milo finds himself behind bars.As Andy digs deeper into the case, he decides to represent Billy. What Andy and his team find is a cover-up of major proportions.
