I love Walter Dean Myers so I figured I would probably enjoy this book. He has a realistic view of what it's like for a young person struggling to see the point in trying to rise above street life. As someone who works in a high school with teens like Lil J, I have heard the same excuses from my students about why they choose to give up when it comes to planning a future for themselves. Also, I appreciate how Myers' characters have a street dialect but he doesn't use a lot of obscenities. The ending is realistic, too, because it leaves the reader with questions and not a clear-cut resolution. In the story Dope Sick by Walter Dean Myers it's about a young adult who lives in the streets of Brooklyn. In the story they call him Lil j. He was basically trying to turn his life around but an incident happen when he was doing one last job with his friend Rico. Rico and himself where doing a drug deal but the person they were selling the drugs was a undercover cop. During the drug deal the cop was about to arrest them and then Rico pulled out a gun and shot him. At the same time Lil j was shot in the arm by the cop. They both ran and Lil J ran to an abandoned building while Rico got captured by the popo. When they questioned Rico about the shooting he blamed Lil J for shooting the cop. Later on the cops are outside of the building where Lil J is hiding and Lil J starts panicking. He meets a person name Kelly in the building and they discuss the situation he's in and then a big thing occurs. I recommend this story to people who like a good thriller and who likes gang violence. This is truly one of the story's I really read and liked. There is a lot of ups and downs in this story and this storyline is different from other books that I read from the past. If your not a big fan of drug deals or gang affiliation I don't recommend this book to you because the whole story is about how a kid is in a rough neighborhood and the life of a drug dealer. At the end of the day this is a really good book and it has a good spin towards the end. My final thoughts about the book is that I will continue to read Walter dean myers books because I really like the style he writes his books. I feel like the books he writes about I could relate to him or his stories because I have seen similar stuff in his story in real life. I really liked the book and I would really look forward to an continuation of Lil J life. I also enjoyed the ending of the story and that's another reason why I recommend this book to other people.
Disappointed... I thought the story was going somewhere, but in the end it didn't.

The touch of magical realism made this book a cut above typical adolescent lit.
