Ishmael's struggle to get his new crew in order was unexpectedly engaging. As someone working in an office, I felt a lot of empathy towards him, especially when combating toxic elements in his work/job. This series as a whole has been very surprising in its ability to both be very down to earth and keep me from putting it down . I have to give Nathan Lowell a tremendous amount of credit for creating essentially "Horatio Hornblower in space" and being able to make it equal parts realistic in its lack of space opera-ness, philisophical, and practical. Well, I used to think these were a little light and fluffy but this one isn't. It is just nasty. The first mate rapes whichever female crew member takes his fancy. There are hints that the captain is raping the two gay crew members. Also it seems that all the females crew are expected to make themselves available to whichever male crew member wants them - i.e. they are also getting raped on a regular basis.Only the first mate and the captain's behaviour is considered wrong by both the hero and presumably the author.Just nasty.
