I repeated. “If she was afraid, why didn’t she call 911, or call you directly? She had your number.”“I don’t know.”“What if she’s dead?” I looked up at Malone. “What if I could have saved her if I’d gotten here sooner?”“We don’t know that she’s dead.” He turned to talk to the two officers who had returned. It sounded like the problem was that no one was home in the other apartments and very few in the surrounding homes.
