Age recommendation: 4+This is a great first comic book/graphic novel option for any kid. The cartoonist first took photographs of fields and woods, then drew his characters over them, and then took photographs of his, his son's, and his cat's faces to use for the character's faces. The result is a very different experience, but one that's a fun, quick read that could kickstart a child's interest in the format. I have terribly mixed feelings about this book. Some kids will love it, but the format really got on my nerves. To me, it seemed too forcibly cute and silly, as if Kochalka was trying to write the book as if it was written by a young child...nonsensical and full of dream-logic, instead of a coherent story. That, combined with the weird conceit of using photographs for the faces, just annoyed the heck out of me. The photos of the cat were selected and edited with great skill. I just didn't care for the way it looked.I gave it a third star for the cat faces and the silliness factor, which WILL appeal to at least some kids.
What do You think about Dragon Puncher (2010)?
I enjoyed the unusual, hipster illustration style, but the story is pretty weak.
