Dragones Y Tacos (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

This hysterical story is about how dragons LOVE tacos! They will do anything and go anywhere for tacos! However, one important detail is they DO NOT LIKE spicy salsa!! When they attend a party and accidentally eat tacos with spicy salsa, the worst possible thing happens. But these nice dragons come to the rescue!Have the students share what their favorite foods are, review how the tacos are made in the book, then have the students color a picture and write directions for their own favorite food. This may be a take home activity, and have children bring these foods into class the next day and share their directions. Discuss how some students have allergies, a lot like how the dragons do not like salsa, and react negatively to it, how is this similar to food allergies, or other allergies? Rubin, A., & Salmieri, D. (2012). Dragons love tacos. New York: Dial Books for Young Readers This one is pretty text heavy -- while it could be a great whole group read aloud, it might also be a powerful tool with small group work (for support or challenge depending on grade level).Reading:What are all the things the dragons like or love? While dragons love tacos, they hate spicy salsa. How do these two facts affect the plot of the story? Writing:What are some things you love? What are some things you don’t love? Craft a story that brings together two of these things to create a big problem. This story has a great mix of sentence structures that you could observe to support many of the intermediate Language standards.
