I bought this book as a gift for a pregnant friend whose father is notorious for battling the squirrels who try to get to his bird feeder. As an adult, I found this book and illustrations funny. And, it will be a funny gift since there is an inside joke there. I think it is also a good story for kids although, I imagine parents won't like the word 'hate' being used a couple of times to describe how Old Man Fookwire feels about the squirrels. My story time audience was laughing at the antics in this book from the first utterance of the main character's name: Old man Fookwire. The illustrations are pretty funny, Fookwire is a grumpy old man, with an extremely long neck, who lives alone and loves only one thing: painting the birds that visit his garden. He does not like the squirrels that disrupt his life and interfere with the birds. At the end of the book, Fookwire and the Squirrels have made peace, but only after some laugh-out-loud funny things have occurred. Fun read-aloud, my story time audience loved this one.
