Draw! (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

In this wordless book, a boy takes an imaginary journey to Africa through his drawings of different animals. As he draws each animal, it is as if he is really there. In the end, he shows his pictures to his classroom. The pictures are absolutely beautiful and colorful. The story is fun as you follow the boy from one animal to another, even when he has to run from the storming rhinoceros. This is a wonderful book for any young inspiring artist. I would have liked it to be a little longer, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Draw is a beautiful picture book with no words. In this story a young boy is sitting in his bed drawing pictures. The story takes you to Africa and shows the boy drawing pictures of animals. In this book you get to see gorgeous drawings of elephants, lions, rhino's and many other African animals. I think this book is a great approach to wordless picture books and that it allows for much discussion on the importance of art and drawing. If I were to create a lesson plan with this book I would first read it to my students. Before we discussed what happened in the book I would ask my students to write words to the story. This would allow us to see how different everyone's perspectives can be because there are no words. We would talk about how much you can say with out any words and then I would have the children break into groups and create their own wordless picture book. Finally each group would share their story with the class.Foss, Erik, and Curse Mackey. Draw. Centro Histórico: Museo De La Ciudad De México, 2011. Print.
