Ein Skandalöses Rendezvous (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This is the first book I have read of Madeline Hunters. The book was enjoyable, playing around with the love-hate relationship. Whilst the twist at the end was surprising, my interest wasn't fully engaged, whilst I felt the need to finish the book it's not one that I would stay up until 2-3 in the morning to finish. The way in which the character perspective and scene changed was also abrupt at time. Solid 3 stars As far as historical romances go, this one was pretty good. The side mystery was interesting and the characters were generally well developed. As much as my feminist heart ached at the way the main heroine responded to her husband, it's one of the few times I've seen a REALISTIC historical expectation of "husband" and "wife" presented in a way that wasn't either kitschy or offensive to the MCs; it just was. Not every female in a historical romance needs to be a magical 90s era feminist, after all.But I admit I was very confused by the "sex" in the book. Early in the novel, we see an explicit scene with one of the side characters, but the actual scenes between H/h were flowery, non-specific, and rather obtuse. It made zero sense to go from a direct and interesting prose style to that, like smearing a gob of Vaseline on the entire camera lens; I just wanted to rub my eyes because I thought they were cloudy. Just very off-putting.I picked this one up on the cheap at a thrift store but I'd consider reading more in the series if I'm looking for a decent HR to keep my brain occupied. Brain candy ahoy!
