El Jardin Del Abuelo (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Date: October 15th, 2014Author: Lane Smith (Illustrator)Title: Grandpa Green Plot: A great grandchild retells the story of his great-grandfather from the time he was born to the present while maintaining a beautiful green garden with over-the-top landscapes. Setting: Green Garden Characters: Unnamed great-grandchild, Grandpa Green Point-of-Views: Third-Person, First-Person Theme: Family HistoryStyle: The illustrations include different shades of green; plus the illustrations tells the story about Grandpa Green's life, so it would be important for the reader to keep note of that because even though the words tell the story, the illustrations do just as much. Copyright: 2011Notes: From my perspective, the book briefly mentions Alzheimer's without exactly saying it verbally. The clue for me was when the narrator stated "he used to remember everything", "and he sometimes forgets things", and "the garden remembers for him". These words in the text in my perspective indicate that Grandpa Green's garden helps him remember his life in the past and present. Smith, L. (2011) Grandpa green. New York. Roaring Book Press.School Library Journal star reviewChoiceThis is a very beautifully written and illustrated picture book. I do not expect young readers to enjoy it very much. The text is written in green and gets lost not the page and is written in different fonts and sizes all over the page. I also do not think the storyline would be appreciated by a younger audience. Perhaps it could be used by a family if someone in their family suffers from Alzheimers. I am glad I read this story, but I probably wouldn't read it to a classroom of students.
