It seemed new until I got halfway through it and then started worrying (aGAIN) that I'd read it before. Probably just that deja vu short-circuit in the brain, but I got all frustrated about it. No matter how many uniquely cruel ways Serge comes up with to kill people, and only people who would deserve it (at least within the confines of fiction), it all starts to run together. I swear, though, the Ransom-of-Red-Chief son shtick was a repeat. I guess not. Oh well.Serge Storm's latest fixation is creating a faux on-the-lam vacation for the bored office denizen. Little does he realize that while researching this, he's actually being pursued by a new branch of Florida law enforcement that's been set up ostensibly just to bring Serge to justice. Oh, and also by now noir PI Mahoney who speaks incomprehensible vintage PI cant. Mahoney's madness may just be the source of inspiration officers White and Lowe need to apprehend Serge.In the more sane world of crime, Serge's grandfather's old gang is being fleeced by a canny shyster and the remaining elderly members have asked for Serge's help. I don't recall any barracuda, but expect many gators. I had a hard time finishing this book. I did, but it really bored me to tears. It was like watching MTV with constant flashing camera angles all the time and left wing politics sprinkled throughout. Boring! It seems like a thousand other books cloaked with a thin plotline of a likable serial killer killing only bad people. I can see it appealing to junior high boys more than any other demographic.
