Empire Of Gold (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This was one of the better ones of the series. I enjoyed the differing events in this book and the tensions that will be explored in the next book. I especially enjoyed the last parts of the book and the convergence from the usual formula of the previous novels; actual twists - nice touch. I'm starting to find that the constant 'action action action' is getting quite redundant though. The purpose of action in a book is to drive events forward. When a book - such as this one - is basically all action the reader either feels compelled to keep reading the whole thing at once - unfeasible, it's really long - or pause every time the action stops. I found that I did degrees of both reading this; I'd read a lot in one sitting and then with a pause I'd stop and not feel compelled to even touch the book for days because there wasn't that need to keep going. Just a few thoughts. Overall, I found it enjoyable and much the same as the others. I'm angry with Andy McDermott, and no this is not a bad review. He simply ruined my summer.Oh, he wrote a quality book in "Empire of Gold." The adventure captured me from first page to last. The problem is, the story goes beyond the last page -- way beyond. Into a whole other book. Those hoping to read "Empire" as a standalone -- it is summer after all and there are concerts, sporting events and vegging on the porch with your favorite beverage -- prepare for disappointment. Consider this a precaution not a spoiler, but upon completing the last page, you'll have more questions than answers. You'll feel left hanging in a more precarious state than main character Eddie Chase dangling off a perilous cliff about to get washed away by deluging flood water. Oh, and Andy McDermott will own your summer. He does mine. I had not read the previous installments in this series, but the publisher gave no indication of vital back story or any, dare I risk the cliche, cliffhangers. But a cliffhanger ending is what I got, and that's a major bummer when hoping for a quick-hit one-and-done novel. Now I'm off to the bookstore to get the next one.The good news is the back story is not essential. And the plot kept me curious enough. Most notable, however, by this point in the series the main characters are finely tuned and share unique but deeply interwoven relationships. A major score on likability, these characters will lure me back in desperation to uncover their fate. Ooh, I'm so mad at you Andy Mcdermott, there goes my summer. I must rate his character development among the best, rivaling masters such as Stephen King. With its treasure-hunt theme and tropical setting, "Empire of Gold" rates high as a summer adventure read, but if you're taking it to the beach, pack the other novels in the series and plenty of sunblock. You'll be absorbed.
