Encontrarnos A Nosotros Mismos (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
The title "We Find Ourselves" should have warned me. One of the flaws of the series is that often, the writer tells us through dialogue that the character is changing, instead of showing us through actions. In addition to that, insight and changes seem to happen regularly (if we are to believe the dialogue). The result of having characters staying the same, if judged by their actions, and at the same time making a pro-claimed journey, if judged by the dialogue, is that we start caring more about their actions and less about their dialogue.Rick's journey in this volume exemplifies this problem. If we are to believe the dialogue, he goes from being hopeful to feeling dead within one day. His actions tell a different story: above all, he is a caring father (no change), and the steps he takes to ensure the sustainability of the entire community shows him as a more caring, determined and understanding leader than we have seen in the past. Yes, he is still confused and in mourning, but that he now has "found himself" and the feeling is that he died at some point is not earned. First off, the last panel of this volume is exactly why I have an issue with this artist. Sure it looks fine at first. It's a man and woman on a couch kissing. But take a second glance and it seems off. I looked at it for awhile and it's almost like the two figures were drawn nearly independently of each other and then layered together. The girl looks great, but the guy feels awkward. I just really don't find the art impressive and the lack of color just means it's harder to disguise the flaws. As for the writing this time around, it's standard fare. I enjoyed the conflict. It's nice to look to the future and it was more of a cerebral arc than the last one, but it has plenty of action and tension. Some of the dialogue still feels a bit weird and dramatic for the situation, but it's passable. Anyway, it's more Walking Dead. By now you know what you're getting.
