Eurydice (2003) - Plot & Excerpts

*4.5With a title like that, you'd assume some kind of feminist themes — the story told from her point of view, etc. Not that that's bad, but not something I'd necessarily look forward to so much. But perhaps that's what feminism is, more modernly speaking. We shouldn't care. It's just human. I also would like to preface this saying that it happens to strike me, but there's no reason i should think it appeals to a larger majority. But I would recommend it.There's no real time and place. Transcend it, why not? Mix periods and types of thought but it all turns into the same truths, these universals, these...The simplistic elegance of it all: remembering, forgetting, love, learning, relearning, reforgetting, words words words and the poetry of music, the art of theater, water, strings and things...Highly enjoyable, and a fast read too. I read this in a college course, "Tragic Women." I loved it, and returned to read it recently. The first time I read this, it had an "Alice In Wonderland" kind of appeal. While it still does, I appreciate the adult aspects of loss. Eurydice's attempt to reconnect with the living and the dead is incredibly easy to relate to. Eurydice is a classic for many reasons but Sarah Ruhl's modern rendition is my favorite.

What do You think about Eurydice (2003)?

Interesting retelling of the Orpheus myth. Lots of food for discussion in the class I'm teaching.
