It's cute. Perfect for girls who love horses and/or the ol' west. Nellie Sue is a fun character and I like her attitudes throughout the book. She's a good example of being a good girl and of being positive. But perhaps that's a bit much for my birthday theme storytime? Not sure. It would be fun to read this with my Texas accent.P.S. Perfect book to read today, since it is my niece's birthday--and she loves horses! Great for every little girl who dreams of horses.A perfect example of how the text and illustrations complement each other in a picture book. Nellie Sue dreams of being a cowgirl and she narrates the story as if she's working on a ranch, but the pictures show the reality that she's a suburban kid. For example: "After breakfast, I hosed fresh water into Ginger's trough and moseyed off to muck the stalls in the barn" is accompanied by illustrations of Nellie Sue putting water in the dog's bowl and cleaning the rabbit's cage.
I can't wait to buy this book for every little cowgirl wannabe I know. Cute, sassy, and delightful!
