Every Little Piece (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Every little piece is a heartbreaking story of two high school sweethearts who are tragically affected by one night of bad choices. I enjoyed it for the most part. Sometimes the characters would get on my nerves, their plight and emotions a little unbelievable. As someone who has lost a best friend in a car accident sometimes I felt Haley's reactions were entirely self-absorbed and motivated only for reasons to make others feel bad for her. She is a very selfish character as is Seth who is borderline feminine. The other thing I found strange was everyone having normal names: Haley, Seth, Katie, Carly, Noah... And then her best friends are Brin and Kama. At first I thought this was a typo but the more the story went on the more the names felt out of place and took me out of the "small town" setting that the book gives because of how exotic and strange the names were. I struggled getting into this story, it wasn't until the last half of the book that it was able to keep my interest. I think the issue was that I wasn't able to see a strong connection from the beginning between the two main characters. I understand they were high school sweethearts but there wasn't enough detail for me as a reader, to form an emotional connection between the two prior to the accident and their subsequent separation. Because of this I wasn't emotionally invested in the story so their separation didn't drive me to root for them. The last half of the book picked up in action, and I was curious if the truth would come out, which is why I decided on 3 stars. I would like to add trigger warnings for those that are currently in the grief cycle, this would not be the book for you.
