Everything For A Dog (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

BONEBone and his sister, Squirrel are stray dogs born in a wheelbarrow in a shed. Their mother leaves them as puppies. They obediently wait for her, but she doesn't come back. They decide to set out, as the shed is no longer safe for them, the two young dogs survive for a while together but are soon wrenched apart. Bone must now go on alone, to face the world.CHARLIECharlie is a boy who has suffered a shattering loss. As he is healing with the help of his beautiful dog, another tragedy hits the family.HENRYAll his life, for as long as he can remember, Henry has wanted a dog of his own. His best friend moves away and his parents still refuse to let him get a dog. But why?Bone, Charlie and Henry live very different lives but their stories connect in surprising and stunning ways.I picked up this book because it was about dogs. When I read the description on the jacket, I was intrigued by how their stories would connect. I had recently read "Wonderstruck" by Brian Selznick (Ann M. Martin wrote a book that was illustrated by Brain Selznick!! :D) and that also had two stories/lives connecting and mirroring in surprising ways. Also, I like reading books with the point of view of an animal. It's very interesting to know what the animal is thinking.I finished this book because I wanted to find out how the three lives connected. I already had a guess but I still wanted to finish the book to see how it ended. I hoped Bone, Henry and Charlie would all be happy int he end. I had also heard about Ann M. Martin and I wanted to see if she was actually good. This book did not disappoint and I couldn't put the book down!I would recommend this book to Melanie when she gets a bit older because she really wants a dog and I think she would enjoy the lives connecting part. I think she would also like reading a book about a dog and the love for and from a dog. "Everything for a Dog", by Ann M. Martin was a good and sad book.It was a good and sad book because sad things happened unexpectedly.Things that happens unexpectedly can surprise readers and make the readers feel emotional. For example,"Charlie and his father was working until Charlie realizes that Sunny wasn't there."Sunny!Sunny!",called Charlie."SUNNY!" Charlie shouts in his loudest voice possible, and finally Sunny hears him.Charlie and Sunny were not twenty feet apart when a gunshot sounds.Charlie still running toward her. When Charlie got there,Sunny was lying very still, and Charlie turned her over gently, his hands covered with blood. The next morning,Charlie and his parents bury Sunny."(pg.146-147)This quote proves that this happened unexpectedly and that it was sad because Sunny was gone and she was buried the next day, which is sad and it happened unexpectedly because she was right next to Charlie before she disappeared. Also,I chose this quote because this quote was the one that I think that was emotional and unexpected at the same time. So,I can infer that Charlie and his family are sad because as a rule,if someone is missing and is being buried, the people who are related to that person/thing is very sad because someone in their family is gone. And when someone is gone, the person related to him/her won't be able to see them in real life anymore. This was a great technique that the author used because it surprised me and I was bit sad when I was reading the passage. So,this is one example why this book was good and sad at the same time.
