I find the whole thing rather depressing, no matter how well written. Enough with the sexual depravity already. I was dismayed to find the next in the series was just a continuation of the storyline in this book. I certainly don't deny it existed, but surely there is other interesting subject matter during that time period that could be explored. This series started out with so much promise, but I have grown weary of spending time with deviants in the gutters of London. Can we bring it up to street level? I'd prefer not to have had these sordid mental images created forever in my mind... A continuation of the William Monk mystery series and an excellent read if one is following this series. Might be a bit confusing if one is not. Set in mid-18th century London, Monk's career has led him from metropolitan police detective to private agent of inquiry to his current post as commander of the river police, a separate entity from the metropolitan police. The books develop fine characters from the first novel "Face of a Stranger" to this current one, with surprises, differing character views as the plot develops, and interesting historical settings in a variety of London's neighborhoods. Worthwhile for anyone who likes mysteries or stories set in Victorian England.
