Facing The Music And Living To Talk About It (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I've been a huge Backstreet Boys fan my entire life, so this book really meant a lot to me when it came out. I was never a huge Nick fan, but I definitely have more respect for him after reading his story. I love how he's trying to help others out by his own personal experiences, and I love how he takes ownership for his past actions, and that he's moved on from his demons. There's a lot to learn from Nick Carter, and it's not just his boy band good looks or dance moves. Like most other reviewers, I read this book because I've been a huge fan of both Nick and the Backstreet Boys for years. I do not mean to diminish what Nick has been through at all, but I do question some of his methods (mainly his "self-imposed" drug rehab which he did on his own.) While I understand that it's possible for people to do this, as a mental health professional in training, it bothered me. Also, while he says almost constantly that he's an advocate for therapy and that he's still a work in progress, he also seems to write in parts like he's an expert on certain things (while using the incorrect terminology.)and telling people that he "snaps himself out of" his depression like if you do what he did, it will be that easy. He's also entitled to have an opinion about medications, but to say that "most people don't need them" when he's claiming not to be an expert, and therefore not to know a lot about the subject, seemed inappropriate to me. I'm proud of his progress and I'm glad that he's doing so much better, but I question, as others have, whether he is in a position to try to help people just yet. His intentions are admirable, but I think it was premature. I also understand what people have said about him going on incessantly about his healthy eating and exercise. These things are important, but I would worry about the possibility of replacement addiction. It is possible to get too much of a good thing and go too far in the other direction. I also had to mentally proofread throughout. I understand wanting it to be written in the way he would speak, but there are enough grammatical errors to interfere with reading it.

What do You think about Facing The Music And Living To Talk About It (2013)?

this was definitely more a self-help read than a memoir but it was still an interesting read.
