Finally finished reading the book. I learned a lot of lessons in the stories. But I didn't like the last story, The Gate Key. Well, it was predictable and frankly, I don't find plots as such pleasing or even worth the time. But overall, I like reading all the tales of Andersen. Each had it's way I related to. I'm giving it 4/5 just because I really did not like the last tale. Though I would read the entire book again especially to my students. :) Classic fairy tales filled with strange occurrences, flippant morals, and morbid, disturbing, and strange acts. Why do so many of them concern being forced to marry undesirable mates? They are filled with a strange mix of religion and superstition. The Ugly Duckling was my favorite because of the lessons taught about individual worth and personal potential. I will say that Mr. Andersen has a very descriptive visual style, which was the biggest redeeming factor.
