First, the good things about this book. It is perfect for an early chapter book for grades 2-5 as advertized. There is something for each of those grades in this book. Nancy is a fun loving character who loves sleuthing, Nancy Drew, and big words. She is very active and has lots of friends. She is a positive role model in that she is not mean to others even when they have done bad things. Her upbeat attitude is contagious. The adults also had good attitudes. I really liked that. The illustrations are also beautiful and interesting. For older readers the writing style lends itself for a very quick read even though it is over 100 pages. One thing that drove me crazy while reading this book is when Nancy would jump from one mystery to another. Everywhere she looked there was another mystery. I would have liked this book to focus on one mystery throughout the book. I would say this book was more about Nancy the mystery lover rather than Nancy, the detective. Nancy also used A LOT of big words. This is okay for the better readers or older readers, but not the beginning readers. This book could be frustrating for them. This is the first book in the Nancy Clancy series and I look forward to reading the next. Fancy Nancy grows up with her fans to be Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth!! This is first chapter book in the series by Fancy Nancy picture book and easy reader author Jane O'Connor and illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser. I'm already looking forward to reading the next one! My favorite line in the book is on page 112: "Twin worms of snot were dripping from her nose." What vivid imagery! The narrative flows easily and keeps the reader engaged through foreshadowing as Nancy and her BFF Bree solve mysteries like Nancy Drew. This new series is a great way for Fancy Nancy fans to get into chapter book reading. Nice illustrations, too! I'm looking forward to reading Nancy Clancy, Secret Admirer and Nancy Clancy Sees the Future.
