Still, something scuffled about in the brush outside, twisting the oleander, opening a space right in front of the basement window. A shadow crouched down, fingers tapped against glass. “Kira. Are you down there?” I sucked in a long breath, then rushed forward. “Sean?” I stopped halfway across the floor, wondering if it was really him. Why would he be here in the middle of the night? He knocked softly against the glass with his knuckles and I saw the outline of his head and shoulders. “Kira.” I scurried to the window, too high to reach without a ladder, and looked up. He saw me and smiled and I suddenly remembered what I had been doing the last time he saw me. I had been driving away from the party with Caleb. “Can you come outside? Just for a few minutes?” he asked. I nodded, then gestured toward the back door.
