Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs Of Legendary Ace Robin Olds (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Robin Olds was one of the great fighter pilots of WW II and Vietnam. Col Olds is best known for his unsurpassed skills with the F4 Phantom in the Asian Theater. He was a fighter Pilots Pilot. He led fighter pilots. I picked up a copy of this book because of my love of aviation. I soon found it contained a great discussion of his leadership style. His style was one of deep technical competence, a belief in his men, good systems follow through, constant preperedness and camaraderie. The book was based on some of Robin's own writing and then interview of him by his daughter when his health was failing. As a result, the book is filled with sincerity and honesty. It is a great book about a great man. For all the flying enthusiast and history buffs this is a masterpiece. The memoirs give an incredible insight in the psyche of larger than life character. Robin's life epitomizes romance for flying, for dying for your buddies, for boosting and coaching your juniors and above all the brashness and cockiness associated with a fighter pilot, the quality of calling a spade a spade irrespective of the situation or the surrounding ranks. I was deeply floored by his takes on fear. For him fear for natural and nothing to be ashamed off, but it was not to be left festering on you...and latter quality would determine whether you will fly the next day or not.Superb work done here by her daughter.A wonderful read indeed. Thank you goodreads
