Finché Le Stelle Saranno In Cielo (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

The Sweetness of Forgetting is a love story, couched in the sadness of the Holocaust. It is a story of a family living on Cape Cod whose hearts and ability to express love for each other are complicated by the matriarch of the family, Rose, who is suffering from Alzheimer's. Rose's granddaughter Hope and Hope's daughter Annie become captivated by Rose's sudden list of family names (members from Paris,France). Are they real? Who are they? Who is Leona? All these questions need to be answered. In her quest for answers, Hope, with encouragement from Gavin, a friend, travel and track down the pieces to the puzzle. Despite the fact that the story is fictional, one learns of previously unknown (by me) righteous gentiles, Muslims practicing Besas, within Europe who help Jewish people escape the horrors of Nazi Europe (and France). Ultimately the questions are answered, people are discovered and emotions by this reader are very close to the surface! Not too many books actually bring me to tears while I read them, but this one did. When I read this novel involving the Holocaust, I realize that although this particular story may be a work of fiction, there are THOUSANDS of stories out there that are not. Thousands that have actually occurred. The enormity of that is overwhelming to me. That makes this "fiction" a "non fiction" for me. It makes it real. I enjoyed this book. What I did not enjoy was the relationship between Hope and Annie, especially at the start if the story. Annie was shallow, and perhaps for a 12 year old girl, it made sense. I just often wondered why Hope don't just slap her because of the way she spoke to her mother. Their relationship was a little more understood as the book progressed. This is all probably just me being finicky.
