Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One Of The World's Fittest Men, And Discovering Myself (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I was first introduced to Rich Roll through his podcast. Dealing with my own substance abuse issues I tuned in to listen to his interview with Charlie Engle. I adore Rich's podcast and would give it the full five starts as a wonderful source of information, insight and inspiration. So naturally, I was anxious to read his book, Finding Ultra.I have the utmost respect for Roll and how he has transformed his life. His story of battling substance abuse was very inspiring for me. I loved the first half of this book and his past and family and career. However, as I read more and more of his book I began to really find Roll arrogant...almost so transformed and into his new self it was obnoxious. Being an endurance athlete myself I am familiar with a lot of the race jargon used in this book but an outsider might find himself lost in translation. The Epic5 portion became nauseating as I read about his cravings of "organic produce, brown rice, steamed vegetables and pressed juice." I found myself screaming, "Get over yourself!"I'll stick to Roll's podcast and return his book to the library. Of all the running/endurance books on my shelf, this one is not my favorite. Really enjoyed this - couldn't put it down, really. I see some other people commenting on the lack of HOW he did it via nutrition, and I never even noticed, I guess because I already know to some extent since I've been eating a high raw vegan diet for so long. The thing is that you can't really explain other than that...you have to DO it to really understand the difference.I did notice promotional stuff for products him and his wife sell, but it was quite minimal and hell, it's his product so can you blame him? I didn't find it annoying, besides you have a lot of things to choose from, he's just giving an option IF you want it. Fair enough? Better than lots of other garbage out there. It IS about diet and nutrition and it's basically about eating like 99% whole foods from plants.Just mentioning these things as other people brought them up, but I found the story riveting and inspiring. I love to see how people RADICALLY change their lives, especially LATER in life, when most people think it's too late, there's no point, etc - that is BULLSHIT. Start now, I don't care how old you are, it's never too late to get healthier.

What do You think about Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One Of The World's Fittest Men, And Discovering Myself (2012)?

Fascinating story of endurance and overcoming alcoholism. Not so sure about his vegetarianism...

Wow. From a near heart attack climbing a flight of stairs to that...truly inspiring.
—konspiracyy

Quite a story. Gets a bit too preachy about eating vegan. Some good info though.

Good but a bit of a one trick pony and Rich's narration gets quite annoying.
