Holy unexpected occurrences! I tried reading this a few months ago and just couldn't get into it. So so glad I gave it another chance! It's a fun and charming book (like many things I enjoy, I can see how some might find these characters a bit too quirky and odd). As a teacher I adore how DiCamillo uses advanced vocabulary - there's always just enough context clues for younger readers to pull together a decent understanding. This book is about Flora, a ten year old girl and Ulysses, her superhero squirrel. Flora parents are divorced and she feels lonely and depressed about it and the only thing that eases the pain is doing what she loves-reading comic books. When Flora unexpectedly runs into Ulysses they both take on an adventure and fine friendship and most importantly love. The themes of this book are hope, love, and loneliness. After reading this book teachers could have students create their own superhero with a superpower and create a comic strip.
The audio version was very entertaining. Love the vocabulary.
